Kekova is one of the most unique historical regions in Antalya, located between the districts of Demre and Kaş. It is especially famous for the ancient ruins known as the Sunken City of Kekova, which attract visitors from all over the world.
The history of Kekova dates back to the Lycian Civilization. The Lycians were highly skilled in maritime trade and established important coastal settlements in this region. Among the most notable ancient cities are Simena (modern-day Kaleköy) and Aperlai.
Over time, powerful earthquakes caused parts of these ancient settlements to sink beneath the sea. Today, visitors can clearly see submerged stone houses, stairways, and harbor structures beneath the crystal-clear waters while passing by boat.
During the Byzantine era, the region continued to be inhabited, but frequent pirate attacks and natural disasters eventually led to its abandonment. Today, Kekova is a protected archaeological site and can be explored through guided boat tours.
Sailing through the Sunken City offers a truly unforgettable experience, where history and nature blend in perfect harmony.
